Defibrillators Available

Los Medanos Community Healthcare District is very pleased to announce our new effort to save lives of Pittsburg and Bay Point residents.  Seventy-five percent of the people who die suddenly of heart disease, often without previous symptoms, are outside of a hospital setting.  Statistics show that fewer than 5% of those who experience cardiac arrest outside of a hospital will survive.  Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) have been shown to increase a person’s chance of survival when used immediately.

Los Medanos Community Healthcare District has a limited number of very easy to use AEDs available, at no cost, to place in non-profit public locations where there are large gatherings of people.  Priority will be given to public places where those who gather may be at higher risk for a cardiac event, such as senior citizens or athletic events.  This is your organization’s opportunity to have an AED available to the public and to have your staff trained in the use and maintenance of the defibrillator, as well as basic CPR.  We have collaborated with a local agency, CPR F.A.S.T., who will provide those who are awarded an AED the training required.  This also will be at no cost to your organization.

Approved organizations will receive the AED, an accessory pack, and an alarmed AED cabinet to be mounted in a publicly accessible area.  The medical oversight of the AED, coordination of training. and all necessary forms will be provided to the organization that is awarded an AED.  For those who are concerned about liability in providing AED services to the community, we have a list of websites on the State statutes and regulations that should ease those concerns.

Please complete the form (LMCHD_AED_ApplicationForm.pdf), and feel free to include any additional information on separate pages that would benefit the approval of your application.  Send the completed form to:

Press Release

Bay Point Gets Lessons on Healthy Eating
For Release: July 6, 2009
Contact: Denise Milosevich, 925-313-6110

Free cooking classes in Bay Point teach families and teens how to eat healthy without breaking their budget.

Contra Costa Health Services, (CCHS) in partnership with the Los Medanos Community Healthcare District, is hosting cooking classes for families and teens. Participants will learn how to transform their favorite recipes into healthy recipes, how to cook on a budget and how to make their own fresh fruit drinks. All classes require pre-registration. Cooking lessons for families will take place on July 14, 21, and 28 from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Teen cooking lessons will take place on August 4, 11 and 18 at the same times. Please note that space is limited.

"The classes are aimed to reduce obesity rates in the community by teaching families how to make healthier choices in the foods they eat," said Ana Villalobos, Health Educator with CCHS' Nutrition and Physical Activity Promotion Program.

The 90-minute classes will cover tips on how parents and teens can incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their daily meals.

"We know that eating at least three to five cups of fruits and vegetables a day can prevent disease and helps to keep weight down. The recipes we use in these classes are examples of how fruits and vegetables can be integrated into everyday recipes," said Andrea Menefee, Manager of the Nutrition and Physical Activity Promotion Program.

A recently released report from Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation shows about 30% of children in California ages 10-17 are obese or overweight.

"Obesity can lead to high blood pressure, chronic heart disease and type II diabetes but it can also lower self-esteem and affect relationships with peers. All this can be prevented by making healthier choices. These classes teach how," said Menefee.

To sign up for classes participants should call the NEW Kids Project voicemail recorder at 925-313-6860. More information about the classes and the NEW Kids Project is available online at www.cchealth.org

Los Medanos Community Health Care District’s
Response to the Swine Influenza

Wednesday April 29th, 2009 at 1:57 PM

Statement:

LMCHD is actively coordinating our resources with the Public Health Department, Health Services Department as well as local clinical providers in the area to address the outbreak of the swine influenza. In an effort to be “proactive rather than reactive”, the District is taking the following actions.

  1. The District has called an Emergency Board Meeting for Friday May 1st at 3:00 PM.

  2. LMCHD Board of Directors has been in contact with the Pittsburg School District officials, to offer our assistance given the announcement of school closings in the community.

  3. The LMCHD Board of Directors with support from the Executive Director will assist in providing resources, information and education as a prevention measure to prepare and inform our residents.

  4. The LMCHD will look at how Emergency Funding could be available to assist in these efforts through increased service delivery and through the District’s Grant Funding Initiative.

  5. LMCHD will coordinate our efforts with The Center for Human Development in Pittsburg/Bay Point.

  6. LMCHD will coordinate our efforts as Health Advocates with the Clinical Services Manager at the Pittsburg Health Clinic located at Loveridge Road.

Situation Update

  • A public health emergency has been declared by the Secretary of Health and Human Services because of the 2009 outbreak of swine influenza (swine flu).

  • Due to a significant increase in demand for swine influenza testing throughout the country, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed the Swine Influenza Virus Real-time RT-PCR Detection Panel (Swine Flue Test Kit) for the presumptive presence of swine influenza A (HIN) virus from the nasal or nasopharyngeal swab.

  • Currently, there are no FDA-cleared tests for the swine influenza A (HIN) strain in the United States. Therefore, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the emergency use of Swine Flu Test Kit to test for the presence of swine flu virus. We don’t know for sure if this test can identify all people who may get sick with swine flu.

  • This test could help to determine whether you may have been infected with the swine flu virus, so that public health officials could quickly identify a case and limit its spread. Also, the results of this test, along with other information, may also help your doctor take better care of you.

  • Any significant new findings observed during the course of the emergency use of Swine Influenza Test Kit will be made available on the CDC Swine Flu website.

  • Links to non-federal organizations are provided solely as a service to our users. These links do not constitute an endorsement of these organizations or their programs. LMCHD is not responsible for the content of the individual organization Web pages found at these links.
